Rhita’s journey to Germany

Katharina Weckend | 07.05.2026

Rhita is from Morocco, where she trained as a nurse.

Her dream? To move to Germany, gain new experiences and further her career.

“I wanted to come to Germany because there are a lot of good job opportunities in the care sector here. I also wanted to gain new experiences and get to know my profession in a different country.”

Rhita was able to have her nursing training recognised in Germany. However, as is the case for almost all nurses from non-EU countries, she initially received only partial recognition. This meant that Rhita had to sit a knowledge test to obtain full recognition of her training.

But for international skilled workers, preparations for the big step of emigrating begin much earlier – and this was also the case for Rhita. While she was still in Morocco, she began looking for a suitable job in Germany, started learning German and applied for her visa.

“The biggest problems were the language, the bureaucracy and the recognition process. There were lots of forms and long waiting times.”

Immigrating to Germany is a long and complex process – for now, at least. Germany is looking to centralise and digitise procedures through the Work-and-Stay Agency, which, it is hoped, will speed up the entire recognition process.

Rhita made good use of the time leading up to the knowledge test. Alongside intensive exam preparation, she was already able to gain practical work experience in Germany. She also had more time to improve her German and settle into life in Germany.

“Everything was new to me, especially the language and the system. I had to understand and learn so much first. But it got better with time.”

It took a year for her qualifications to be fully recognised and for her to be able to work as a registered nurse. Her colleagues, in particular, helped her along the way.

“I was given a very warm welcome. My colleagues were helpful and explained to me how everything works. They really helped me settle in.”

Today, Rhita is getting on well and is mastering her daily work routine with confidence. She wants to continue improving her German and also develop professionally through further training. Rhita advises other international skilled workers to start learning German early on.

“The language is crucial for everything. You also need to be patient – it takes time.”
